Ruckus over Covaxin purchase deal in Brazil, $320 million contract with Bharat Biotech canceled

Brazil suspends Covaxin order:

There has been a ruckus in Brazil over the Covaxin purchase deal. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is under the scanner for irregularities in the purchase of Covaxin. Meanwhile, Brazil’s health minister has announced the cancellation of a $324 million deal with Bharat Biotech to purchase 20 million doses of Covaxin.

According to the ANI report, during a press conference on Tuesday, Health Minister Marcelo Quiroga said that the process of procurement of the vaccine would be investigated. Rosario said, “We are canceling this deal as a preliminary precautionary step”. Since there are complaints which could not be properly explained by the complainant, we started preliminary investigation last week. In February, Bharat Biotech’s agreement for Covaxin was signed by both the parties.

The Brazilian government was under question

Actually, the Brazilian government was constantly under the scanner about this deal. However, the government had tried to convince the whistleblowers and also presented an explanation on this issue, but instead of resolving the matter. it got complicated and reached the Supreme Court, after which the Brazilian government has canceled the deal itself. The Health Minister said, “We have formed a team to investigate this matter. Hope it gets investigated soon. Hope we will have the answer of this analysis in less than 10 days. ”

Vaccine dose did not reach Brazil 

the vaccine dose was never sent to Brazil, because the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) had not approved the vaccine import. Negotiations between the Bolsonaro government and Need Medicines (the Brazilian pharmaceutical company that mediated the deal) – have been in question. Whatever the facts are, the contract is being investigated by a Senate panel of the country. Brazilian President Bolsonaro is being accused of ignoring possible corruption in the deal to buy a coronavirus vaccine. Bolsonaro rebuked the Senate committee investigating the government’s Covid-19 response, saying it was aimed at undermining his administration.
