3-day tour: Charleston for photographers

Atlanta (global-adventures.us): Charleston, also known as The Holy City, is the oldest settlement in the state of South Carolina. Located at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers, Charleston has been named as the "best-mannered" city in the U.S. by Marjabelle Young Stewart. Stately neighborhoods, historic buildings, and the USS Yorktown State Park offer photographers plenty of shooting opportunities during the 3-day guided tour.

The scenic seaport town has seen increased investments and a commitment to historic preservation during the last 40 years. The sprawling historic district and Charleston’s Museum Mile will be explored during a leisurely walk on the first day. We will pass by the 1772 built Heyward-Washington House, home of revolutionary patriot Thomas Heyward, Jr. who signed the Declaration of Independence. After the City of Charleston rented the house in May 1791 to accommodate George Washington during a weeklong stay, the home was called Heyward-Washington House. The Nathaniel Russell House, Nature, butterfly, imagine-your-world.comcompleted in 1808, evokes the gracious lifestyle of the city's elite. The Aiken-Rhett House is a perfect example of urban life in antebellum Charleston. Built in 1818, the home of the 61st Governor of South Carolina William Aiken, Jr. has survived virtually unaltered since 1858.

The second day of the tour will be spent in the USS Yorktown State Park. We will visit the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, located in the heart of the Charleston Harbor. The aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, the destroyer USS Laffey, the Balao class submarine Clamagore, the Treasury class Coast Guard cutter Ingham and the only replica of a Vietnam Support Base in the country will provide excellent photo opportunities. Some of the most incredible war planes in the history of aviation and a full scale replica of the 1903 Wright Brothers Flyer are on display in Yorktown's hangar bay and on the flight deck.

The Magnolia Plantation and its gardens will be the final focal point on the third day. Located on the Ashley River, the plantation dates back to 1676 when Ann and Thomas Drayton built a house and small formal garden on the site. The English style garden was photographed by Mathew Brady, who later became famous for his pictures of the American Civil War. In 1870, the gardens known as "Magnolia-on-the-Ashley" developed into the first man-made tourist attraction in the United States. A restored plantation house, a marsh boat tour, and a walk through a black water cypress and tupelo swamp provides plenty photo opportunities.

During the tour, photographers will be able to participate in a workshop, test new gear, upgrade their skills on image processing, or learn more about marketing tools available to present and sell their work (topics vary depending on the date of the tour booked). Some of the seminars are sponsored by manufacturers; others are presented by experienced photo journalists and editors.
