New Titanic Expedition in 2010
Atlanta (Global Adventures): The RMS Titanic Inc., the company that has exclusive rights to salvage the world’s most famous wreck, wants to make another expedition to the shipwreck in 2010. The expedition would be the first by the salvor since 2004, though two other expeditions have been to the site since then, including one by "Titanic" director James Cameron. RMS Titanic went before a judge earlier this week to seek a salvage award for its past expeditions, and to inform the court of its plans.
"Obviously we have an interest in going back to shipwreck for a number of reasons but we want to do it with the blessing of the court," Christopher Davino, president and CEO of RMS Titanic, told The Associated Press after the first of four days of hearings in federal court.
"It's very early in our thinking regarding a strategy for future expeditions," he said, declining to discuss a future plans before informing the judge.
Courts have declared RMS Titanic salvor-in-possession, meaning it has exclusive rights to salvage the Titanic, but have explicitly stated it does not own the artifacts or the wreck itself.
The British travel firm Miles Morgan Travel is also planning a “Titanic Memorial Cruise” on the 100th anniversary of the tragic voyage. The MS Balmoral will follow the RMS Titanic's original itinerary and sail from Southampton on April 08, 2012. The 12 night cruise will pass by Cherbourg on the French coast before calling into the Irish port of Cobh. From here the ship will sail across the Atlantic, arriving at the Titanic site on April 14th/15th, where a memorial service will be held to pay tribute to the passengers and crew who perished on that fateful night 100 years earlier. The voyage will then continue to Halifax, Nova Scotia, the final resting place of many who were on board, before sailing on to New York, the Titanic's ultimate planned destination.
The Titanic was discovered by oceanographer Robert Ballard in 1985, and there has been a collection of artifacts since then that are now ensconced in a Titanic museum. The 5,900 pieces of china, ship fittings and personal belongings are valued at more than $110 million and are displayed around the world by Premier Exhibitions Inc., an Atlanta company. RMS Titanic is a subsidiary of Premier Exhibitions.
