New York (global-adventures.us): The United States is hosting the 2009 International Maritime Organization (IMO) World Maritime Day Parallel Event. The event will kick off on Friday, October 16, in New York, at Pier 60 in cooperation with the North American Marine Environmental Protection Association. The first day will include panel discussions and awards as well as a Green Ship and Maritime Equipment Expo, tours of vessels with environmental initiatives, and a science fair & poster display on the maritime industry's efforts to curb climate change. The public events will remain open throughout the weekend. Additional details can be found in the event flyer.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Department of State, Coast Guard, Environmental Protection Agency, Maritime Administration, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The theme for the 2009 event is Climate Change; A Challenge for IMO Too! The goal of World Maritime Day is to attract public, private, and government attention to the many environmental initiatives within the maritime community to reduce the effects of climate change.
